Global Alcohol Policy Conference
The Global Alcohol Policy Conferences (GAPC) are normally held every second year. The first one was GAPA’s inaugural event in Syracuse, New York, USA in 2000. Later GAPCs have been held in Nonthaburi (close to Bangkok), Seoul, Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Dublin. GAPC is the leading forum for the world’s alcohol policy makers, advocates, researchers, civil society activists and practitioners. The next conference will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2023.
GAPC 2023 to be held in Cape Town, South Africa
GAPC is the leading forum for the world’s alcohol policy makers, advocates, researchers, civil society activists and practitioners. With its high level of heavy episodic drinking and related harms, and its long history of challenges in getting policy shifts in areas such as controls on alcohol marketing and retail sales of alcohol, South Africa will be an ideal venue in which to discuss alcohol policy and in which to host GAPC 2023.
GAPC 2020 in Dublin, Ireland
The 6th Global Alcohol Policy Conference (GAPC) was held in Dublin Ireland in early March 2020, marking the 20th anniversary since the first GAPC. The event was held a week before most of Europe imposed severe restrictions due to the Covid-19 situation. Of the 412 registrations from 50 countries; 340 attended from 47 countries.
GAPC 2017 in Melbourne, Australia
The Global Alcohol Policy Conference (GAPC2017), Mobilising for change: Alcohol policy and the evidence for action, was held from 4-6 October 2017 in Melbourne, Australia.The Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA), Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), and National Alliance for Action on Alcohol Harm (NAAA) hosted this important international conference.
GAPC 2015 in Edinburgh, Scotland
With the title “Momentum for change: research and advocacy reducing alcohol harm” the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) and Alcohol Focus Scotland co-hosted the Global Alcohol Policy Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland from 7-9 October 2015.
GAPC 2013 in Seoul, South Korea
The Global Alcohol Policy Conference 2013 was organised with the Conference theme
“Alcohol, Civil Society and Public Health: From Local and National Action to Global Change” in Seoul. The conference was co-hosted by GAPA, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Seoul Metropolitan Government and Sahmyook University.
GAPC 2012 in Nonthaburi, Thailand
The Global Alcohol Policy Conference was held 13–15 February 2012, with the theme “From Global Strategies to Local Actions” at the Impact Convention Centre, Nonthaburi close to Bangkok, Thailand. The Conference brought together 1,120 participants from 59 countries, including parliamentarians, government officials and NGOs,
Inaugural GAPC in Syracuse, NY, USA, 2000
The Inaugural Global Alcohol Policy Conference was held 31 July – 6 August 2000 in Syracuse, New York State, USA. The Conference called for an international network of organisations independent of the alcohol beverage industry which would bring together global experience and competence to advocate for policies at international and country level to reduce the harm that can be done by alcohol.
