GAPA welcomes the third edition of Alcohol: No Ordinary Commodity, written by an international team of addiction scientists and representing more than a decade of new research, explaining why alcohol policy is needed, how it is made, and the impact it has on health and well-being.

The new initiative launched to address neglected global health crisis of alcohol harms is supported with a $15 million philanthropic award that doubles existing global funding. RESET Alcohol will work in fifteen countries primarily in Latin America, Africa, Asia.

On Friday 27 May 2022, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted the Global Alcohol Action Plan, in the making for two years. GAPA welcomes the decision by the WHA. Now words must be followed by action, globally and in the member countries. For that, adequate resources are needed, particularly in low and middle-income countries to address global inequities.

On January 27th the World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Board (EB) meeting adopted a decision recommending the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May 2022 to adopt the “Draft action plan (2022–2030) to effectively implement the global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol as a public health priority”.

At the GAPA board meeting in December 2021 Dr Kumnuan Ungsuchak resigned from the GAPA board and three new board members were elected.

June Leung, SHORE & Whariki Research Centre, Massey University, New Zealand, has prepared a Summary of the 2020 web-based consultation on the WHO working document Developing an action plan to strengthen implementation of the Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol.

“The Alcohol industry´s Commercial and political  Activities in Latin America and the Caribbean: Implications for Public Health” was released jointly by  four civil society organisations: the NCD Alliance,  GAPA, CLAS, and HCC. The report is also available in Spanish.

June Leung, SHORE & Whariki Research Centre, Massey University, New Zealand, prepared this summary of submissions in the WHO 2019 web-based consultation on the implementation of the WHO global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol since its endorsement, and the way forward.
